I would like consideration given to James Jamerson. It was his driving Bass lines that powered MOTOWN. Granted this may not be considered JAZZ, however, I argue that it was essential to what is hapening today in JAZZ musicianship.
Ray Brown trio was incredible. Jaco obviously. Ever listen to any locals like Sad Happy or Living Daylights? The bass player’s name is Arne and he is one of the best players I’ve ever seen and a very nice guy. Take a listen to the first tune (Sunday Meeting Club)…heck, the whole show is great!

Hmm, I can’t think of any awesome bass solos – perhaps because they usually put me right to sleep!
