Mos Def - The Ecstatic - Auditorium (feat. the Ruler)

Mos Def (on eMusic)

Back story
Mos Def (born Dante Terrell Smith) is an actor and MC.  He became a respected MC in the 90s, mainly in the underground hip-hop scene.  He formed a critically-acclaimed rap group, Black Star, in the late 90s with fellow MC Talib Kweli, and has been part of the ‘socially conscious’ rap scene ever since.

Why this song
This song is from his most recent release, The Ecstatic (on Downtown Records).  It features a striking Indian lounge-style motif (including strings and flute), as well as world rhythms and hip-hop beats, all put together by producer Madlib.  There are dozens of interesting samples as well as guest MC Slick Rick, rapping about a US soldier in Iraq.  Any time people suggest hip-hop lacks musicality, complexity, or a coherent message, I point them to such songs.

Rocco DeLuca & The Burden - Mercy (Bonus Track Version) - Any Man

Back story
Rocco is a newly established artist, though he grew up on the tour circuit with his musical father. He is a blues-rock musician boasting a powerful voice who also plays the Dobro (aka resonator guitar). He was the first artist signed to Kiefer Sutherland’s label, Ironworks Records.

Why this song
This song is from their 2nd release, Mercy, produced by Daniel Lanois. It’s a mid-tempo blues scorcher, featuring great Dobro work and confident vocals. A good starting point for this band.
