Song
Who Knows Who? by Orgone

Back story
Orgone is a Los Angeles-based funk ‘revival’ band on one of my favorite independent labels, Ubiquity Records.  They were primarily a backing band until meeting vocalist Fanny Franklin in 2001, when they started recording both covers and original material.  Their musicianship is top-notch, and they are finally getting some recognition.

Why this song
This song is taken from their debut 2007 release, The Killion Floor, featuring vocalist Fanny Franklin.  It has a vintage vibe that immediately draws you in.  Horn accents, scratchy guitar, and sassy vocals built around a simple mid-tempo groove make for a very accessible yet musical treat.  If you can sit through the entire song without moving to the beat, I’ll buy you a cup of coffee.  Well, not really.

I prefer Lala’s audio streams, but this song isn’t available, so I’m trying Rhapsody. Let me know if you have problems.  Just in case, here is a 30-second sample from Amazon:

Song
Lenda by CéU

Back story
CéU (full name Maria do Céu Whitaker Poças) is an up and coming Brazilian singer-songwriter.  Her music combines samba, reggae, Afrobeat, and touches of electronica.  If you are thinking, uh-oh, electronica means it’s full of lifeless studio trickery, think again.  Real percussion, bass, and guitar are featured throughout her songs, accompanied by modern production techniques and keyboards.  Her debut album was nominated for a Grammy in 2007, and in 2009 she released a follow-up, Vagarosa.

Why this song
This song is taken from her 2005 self-titled release (available the United States in 2007 thanks to the  Starbucks Hear Music label).  It features a strong groove, passionate vocals, and a great melody.  It’s enjoyable on the first listen, and gets better over time.  If you are looking for a modern take on Brazilian vocal music, you should give it a try.
